A Messy Play Kind of Day!

Cornflour Fun!

One of my most loved activities as an early years teacher has to be that of the messy play variety. But in particular, cornflour!

It’s icky, it’s slimey, it’s firm yet it’s gooey, but most of all, it’s just so so satisfying!

When I placed this tray full of goodness in front of my five year old, she squealed in delight! “Wow Mummy! I’m going to make you something special!” And there she sat for the next 45 minutes or so, completely content, conjuring up all sorts of concoctions.

I was presented with: an ice cream sundae with button sprinkles, a bowl of sparkling magical soup, dumplings and so much more. My daughter was in her element!

Engaging in messy play is a great way for children to learn through play and explore their senses; how something feels, tastes, smells, looks. Sensory activities provide feel-good, hands-on experiences that help children to make sense of the world around them.

To try this activity, all you will need is:

  1. A box of cornflour
  2. A small pot of water
  3. A scoop or spoon
  4. A bowl (or several)
  5. Glitter/sparkles/buttons etc are optional

Put a heap of cornflour in a bowl..

Add water scoop by scoop…

Watch the consistency change. (Tip: Be careful not to pour too much water in at once. Think of it like icing sugar.)

Decorate as you wish!

Why not try playing alongside your child? You’ll be amazed by just how enjoyable it can be. I know I’ll be adding it to my list of Summer activities.

Enjoy! And please remember to share! Follow us on Instagram for more fun and simple ideas.
