Phonics fun for the avid block lover!
It’s well known that young children can get lost in building with blocks for hours on end, whether that be with Lego, Duplo, Megabloks, or just plain wooden blocks. That’s because the possibilities and creative opportunities are endless!
With this phonics activity, your child can combine their love of building with blocks with learning how to spell words. What a great way to learn through play!

This phonics activity is a fun way to learn how to spell and can be catered to your child’s needs, giving you the flexibility of making it as challenging or as easy as you need it to be. You could even play this with tricky words or high frequency words that your child is learning.
Simply choose some words that you would like your child to build, then using a dry wipe pen, write the individual sounds for each words onto the blocks (or write on small pieces of post-it notes and stick on) and jumble them all up. Call out the words one at a time for your child to segment (sound out) and build the word by placing the graphemes (letters) in the correct order.

Tip: Try to write digraphs (like the oa in boat) on a double block, like in the image to the left.
Extension ideas:
• Why not encourage your child to then write the words down?
• Or think of a word that rhymes with each word..
• Or say the word in a sentence..
• How about write the word in a sentence?
